Birthday Party Photography – James and Ellie

I was spotted!

During the Summer I had the pleasure of covering James and Ellies joint 18^th and 21^st birthday celebrations at their home in Hickstead.

I was there in an official capacity to cover the night from the start. The evening was a black tie event with everyone turning out exceptionally well dressed!

There were lots of candles to be lit in the garden

Usually at most places where I cover this type of work there are health and safety regulation with regards smoke machines and hazers (as in they make fire detectors totally freak out so are not used) but in this instance the marquee was on private grounds and such rules did not apply.

The smoke machine made the photography interesting, and challenging

It helped make some great images although if there was too much smoke it diffused my flash guns too much and blew everything out with white!

I loved the ambient light and as already mentioned, the smoke helped with this

There was also a popcorn and candy floss machine, some great music and lots of dancing.

I never did have any popcorn

Whilst I’m primarily a wedding photographer I like to do stuff like this from time to time. It also allows me to be creative and try out new approaches I otherwise wouldn’t risk on a wedding day when time is short.

James

On reflection I loved it. It was one thing being there but everyone was so nice as well and it really shows in the resulting images I gave them. I love jobs like this.

Various types and copious amounts of bubbly were to be found on ice... everywhere!

David Riley

Recently I had David Riley pop in for some Headshots at Booheads.

Now David is quite a seasoned actor, presenter and newsreader. He’s also……. well, you remember Cadbury’s fuse bars?

Family Portrait Photographers in Sussex

I met the wonderful Gordon family a few weeks ago. They were in town for a few days break and had found me whilst looking for family portrait photographers in sussex to have some photos taken whilst they were here. There was 11 in the family and it was a bit of a squeeze for a full group shot, especially as it was indoors.

For smaller numbers though we ended outside and as always this is where the photos really shine. Nothing can really compare to the warmth of the sun in portrait photography and everything glows just that little bit more.

Hugo (above) wanted to look everywhere except the camera so while this was a bit of a challenge it also made for some informal looking images (one of which is below).

Portrait Photography | Natalie Piper

Natalie Piper wanted natural light portrait photography as well as some studio work.

Portrait Photography

Photography is really all about recording light and as the well versed saying goes, ‘Amatuers worry about equipment, enthusiasts worry about skill, masters worry about light’.

Good portrait photography is open to interpretation, what I see when I take a picture is luckily what most people want to see also…which is nice.

Natalie popped over from Worthing to update her portfolio as she’s an actress on Casting Call Pro and Spotlight so needed some good updated portrait photography for her agency.

For the most part we mainly completed studio portrait photography but the image above was lit with nothing else but natural light reflected onto her face.

Where was she for this photo?……….. Leaning against the wall of my house.

It’s all about what you do with the light.

Published Photography – Beatrix Von Bourbon

Beatrix Von Bourbon in a major German Newspaper

Nice to see my work hitting the major press (albeit in Germany)

A few months ago I was working the Ministry of Burlesques High Tease at Komedia.

Beatrix Von Bourbon was on stage a couple of times and the resulting shots made it into a major German newspaper this week.

I’m very self critical (it keeps me grounded) so it’s always nice to find that someone thinks my images are worth going to print for.

Special mention should go to Beatrix too for letting me know about the paper. Unfortunately there are very few people who respect the photographer with work my work turning up in all sorts of places.

Portable Photo Booth Hire

Photo Booth Hire is increasingly common with portable studio demand rising. Whilst these setups are simple to do, they are very difficult to do right.

The trouble is space, there’s rarely enough at most events for a full setup and even then, fitting it into a car is impractical to near impossible without a van.

The Lastolite Hi-Lite gets around this by being pop-up in design. Very similar to those tents you see at festivals….only much bigger.

You still need to bring lighting equipment, you still need to fiddle with lighting the floor for that high hey look but it’s well worth the effort in the end.

The general footprint needed to operate the 8 x 7 ft version is about 3 x 2 metres.

For wedding receptions, corporate parties and events this is an absolute blessing because it gets the image right pretty much first time, every time, so you can print on-site almost straight away.

Photo Booth hire is a very cool thing to have at any event.
